Special Circumstances By Sheldon M. Siegel, Inc.

On A Pale Horse by Piers Anthony, Copyright 1983
Copyright 1996 by Recorded Books and Narrated by George Guidall
Piers Anthony is a master of science fiction and fantasy. If you want an excellent take on death and how the job works, this is your book. If you want some insight into the meaning of death and a lighter take on the outcome, this is a good start. If you want a great story with lots of humor, action, and suspense this book delivered it all. The best part of all is that you can truly enjoy the book while doing something else because you have one of the best if not the best narrator reading it to you, actually acting it to you. If you have any interest in life and death, morality and darkness, love and evil, or just need great entertainment this books comes at the very top of recommended books to enjoy by listening.

Pagan Babies

Copyright 2000 By Elmore Leonard

Copyright 2000 by Recorded Books -6 cassettes 7.5 hours

 Narrated by Ron McLarty

Hang with this story as the beginning is nowhere close to where it will end.

This crime story is full reversals and seeming changes of plot, but in the end gives you all the facts of a good ending if a good finish means some good comes of murder, deceit, treachery, and betrayal.  Fortunately, there is comedy tinged with a wry smile about human nature and the ease at which con men are conned and criminals are not always bad people in every aspect of their lives.  Things are not always as they seem.

I really liked this book on tape for a number of reasons.

The narrator has the perfect voice for the story in his almost cynical New Jersey sounding tone.  The other and of course most important is that Elmore Leonard crafted a story with twists that left me spinning even though I am well familiar with his work and thought I couldn’t be fooled.

Enjoy it, I sure did.

Westerns

Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter  copyright 1973

Narrated by Ed Sala

This is the book that the move "The Outlaw Josey Wales," was based on and it has all the excitement and with additional nuances that were not in the movie.  I really enjoyed this book on tape.

Desert Tales, Desert Death Song and Law of the Desert by Louis L'amour

Copyright 2007 by Blackstone Audio

Read by Stefan Rudnicki

Great for an evening story with the kids or while on a ride through the country.

Texas Rifles, Copyright 1960 by Elmer Kelton

Copyright 2002 by Recorded Books

Narrated by George Guidall

The narrator can make anything sound good but with a good story George Guidall can make it come alive.  You will feel as if you are there and the action is great along with the real feel of being in the old west.

The Sacketts: Ride the Dark TrailLouis L'amour, Read by Terrence Mann,

Copyright 1972 by Louis and Katherine L'amour Trust,

4 cassettes by Recorded Books, LLC

ISBN 0-7393-1107-7

This book on cassette is a solid final episode of the Ride the Dark Trail Series and is a view of the hard life in the West when fighting for survival and property rights.  The narrator captures the tone of the book well and the story makes for an excellent book to read while driving or in the late evening.

War and History

The Guns of August

by Barbara W. Tuchman copyright 1962

an Unabridged Narration by Ian Stuart

This book gives you a look at an unnecessary and an accidental war. The narrator does a superb job of maintaining reader interest and the book, though good to read, is presented exceptionally well in audio format. If you want to learn about this generally forgotten war, and see the parallels of modern wars in the miscaculations and waste of lives this is an excellent book.
