It’s not about the money
By Brent Kessel

Book Reviewed by Brent Herrick - June 4, 2008

This is a book about money, but more importantly your relationship with money. The author first uses his background in Yoga and the accompanying daily meditation to understand the wanting mind. Meditation allows you to clear the mind and stop the want, at least temporarily. Kessel describes the genetic requirement of the human mind to want and once the want is filled it wants more. So it is when individuals desire a plasma TV or an ocean cruise, the mind’s eye sets its view on the next desire. Overcoming the wanting mind is the key to having a healthy relationship with money.

The eight financial archetypes described in this book allow the reader to find their perspective or their story that describes their relationship to money. Are you a guardian or a pleasure seeker, or one of the other six archetypes? Once you recognize your type and come to an understanding what it has meant for why your financial situation and life are what they have become, it is possible to make changes or as Kessel describes it, find the middle way with money.

Later parts of the book include other ways to approach your life that give you more satisfaction in dealing with your financial condition. The author also includes his perspective on investing that involves the classic asset allocation strategy of 1/3 real estate, 1/3 in stock, and 1/3 bonds in a simple and clear explanation.

The ideas presented in this book should be useful for anyone interested in coping with their financial problems since many of those problems relate to their ineffective ways of dealing with money.

This book is worth reading.
